It’s the middle of summer. The AC is humming, the fan is running, and your house is still 82 degrees. You’ve checked the thermostat. You’ve stood in front of every vent. Nothing’s changed. So what’s actually wrong?

The answer depends on which symptom you’re seeing — and they’re not all the same problem. A system blowing warm air is different from one that’s tripping the breaker, which is different again from one with a frozen line. Getting the diagnosis right first is what separates a quick fix from an expensive mistake. Here’s how to read what your AC is telling you.

Before assuming the worst, it helps to understand that “running” and “cooling” are two separate functions. The fan and the compressor operate independently, which means your system can move air just fine while failing to actually cool it.

The most frequent culprits are a dirty air filter blocking airflow, a dirty outdoor condenser coil that can’t release heat, low refrigerant due to a leak, or a failing compressor. Each of these has a different fix — and a different cost. Knowing which one you’re dealing with is the first step.

Air Conditioner Running But Not Lowering Temperature: Start Here

When your air conditioner is running but the temperature inside isn’t dropping, the first thing to check is your air filter. A clogged filter restricts the airflow your system needs to function — the evaporator coil can’t absorb heat from the air if the air can’t get to it. This is the one thing you can check and fix yourself in about five minutes. If the filter is gray, matted, or visibly clogged, replace it before calling anyone.

If the filter looks fine, the next likely cause is the outdoor condenser unit. The condenser’s job is to release the heat your system pulls from inside your home. When the coil gets coated in dirt, grass clippings, or debris — which happens regularly in Essex County yards, especially after a windy spring — it can’t do that job efficiently. The system keeps running, but it’s fighting itself. Clearing the area around the unit and gently rinsing the coil with a garden hose can sometimes help, but if the buildup is significant, a professional cleaning is the safer call.

Beyond those two, you’re likely looking at a refrigerant issue. Refrigerant doesn’t deplete on its own — if your system is low, it has a leak somewhere. A frozen evaporator coil means the system is not absorbing heat the way it should — and it’s a sign something upstream has gone wrong.

The most common causes are restricted airflow (usually a clogged filter or blocked return vent) and low refrigerant. When airflow drops too low, the evaporator coil gets too cold and moisture in the air freezes around it. When refrigerant is low, the pressure inside the system drops, which also causes the coil to freeze. Either way, the ice itself becomes a second problem — it insulates the coil and prevents it from doing its job at all, compounding the original issue.

Here’s what to do if you find a frozen line: turn the system off and let it thaw completely. Do not keep running it. Running a system with a frozen coil forces the compressor to work against a blockage, which can cause compressor damage — and compressor replacement is a significantly more serious repair than whatever caused the freeze in the first place. Switch the system to “fan only” mode to speed up the thaw, and check your filter while you wait. If the filter is the culprit, replace it and see if the system runs normally once everything has thawed.

If the system freezes again after thawing, the issue is likely refrigerant — and that requires a licensed technician to diagnose and repair. In older Essex County homes, particularly the Victorian-era and mid-century construction common in Montclair, Glen Ridge, and the Oranges, aging refrigerant lines and older system components make this kind of issue more common. A system that’s been running for 15 or 20 years is more likely to develop a slow leak than one installed in the last five.

AC Tripping Breaker on Startup: The One Thing You Should Not Do Twice

A tripped AC breaker is one of the most mishandled situations we see. The instinct is to reset it and move on — and once is fine. If the breaker trips again after you reset it, stop. Do not reset it a second time.

Here’s why that matters: a breaker trips because something in the circuit drew more current than the breaker was designed to handle. That’s the breaker doing its job — protecting your system and your home. Resetting it repeatedly without knowing what caused the trip means you’re overriding a safety mechanism. In the best case, you damage a component that would have been a straightforward repair. In the worst case, you’re looking at wiring that overheats or a compressor that burns out.

AC Compressor Trips Breaker Immediately or on Startup

When your AC trips the breaker almost the moment it turns on — or within the first few seconds of startup — the compressor is usually the place to look. Compressors draw a significant surge of current when they start up. On a healthy system, that surge is brief and the breaker handles it without issue. On a system where the compressor is worn, struggling, or partially seized, that startup surge can be much higher than normal — what technicians call “locked rotor amps.” The breaker trips immediately because the compressor is pulling more current than it should before it even gets running.

This is not a DIY situation. A hard-starting compressor can sometimes be addressed with a component called a hard start kit, which provides an extra boost of capacitance to help the compressor get moving more easily. In other cases, the compressor itself needs to be replaced. A licensed technician can run diagnostics to determine which scenario you’re dealing with before any work begins.
